We are using data on every steps of our life. We have been writing, saving and organizing the data since our childhood. Our books were first example of information organization. As we grew, the data volume grew and so our method of sorting the useful data information, prioritizing them, saving and organizing in a way that we can easily access it.
Similarly, in Information Technology area, the Databases has came long way from old file based system to RDBMS and now Non Structures combined Cosmos database. It is no more confined with RDBMS concept and have evolved to semi structured and Non Structured databases. As data formats and processing has changed, the RDMBS also evolved to store and process all type of data formats and give us meaningful result which we all can read, understand and take decisions.
With the growing adaptation of Cloud services, the dynamics of traditional Data, storing, processing, and Administration has also transformed to make life easier.
Most of our applications need to store data in some meaningful format and probably store in relational databases like SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL etc. A relational database management system (RDBMS) stores and retrieves data from the tables/entity. A relational database consists of a collection of tables that store inter-related data. This model organizes data into one or more tables (or "relations") of columns and rows, with a unique key identifying each row. Rows are also called records or tuples. Columns are also called attributes.
Most Widely used RDBMS systems are:
- Oracle
- MySQL
- Microsoft SQL Server
- PostgreSQL
- IBM Db2
In 2021, Relational database by revenue were Oracle (48.8%), IBM (20.2%), Microsoft (17.0%)
As Cloud has become norm of business, the database also moved from Traditional Data Center to Cloud based (Azure) Databases. This enabled the ability to scale up your environment to cater the periodic business need (e.g. during Offer period as Christmas). Cloud databases opened the door of Big Data and of any form to store, process, analyze and report.
This change also transform the database management system. Hosts of regular DBA tasks are automated and become self managed such as Backup, Re-indexing, Alerting and so on. Database Administrator now spend time to analyze the business need and enhanced the performance, manage availabilities, and other activities. As Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence is growing, the need of higher database performance is increasing every day.
Cloud has open the door of innovation in every field. Everyday we are seeing new products, new features to transform the data processing and extract more meaning full actionable information.
